The Texas insurance license exam, explained
Texas is one of the most direct states for getting an insurance license: there is no mandatory pre-licensing course, so the exam is the gate. Here is the path from zero to licensed.
How to get licensed in Texas
- 1
Check the basics
Be at least 18 and eligible to work in the United States. Decide which line you are pursuing: Life, Accident, Health and HMO, or Property and Casualty.
- 2
Prepare for the exam
Texas does not require a pre-licensing course for these licenses. Study the official exam content outline and drill realistic, Texas-specific practice questions until you are consistently passing.
- 3
Book and pass the state exam
Schedule with Pearson VUE (about 43 USD per attempt). The General Lines exams run 145 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes; 70 percent is a pass. Retakes are unlimited with a 24-hour wait.
- 4
Get fingerprinted
Complete the fingerprint and background-check requirement through the state-designated vendor.
- 5
Apply for your license
Submit your license application to the Texas Department of Insurance and pay the application fee. Once approved, you are licensed.
